Making the calls
Your team does the work and you make the calls: the decisions only you should make, each one a few options to pick from.
In a company, the team does the work and you make the calls. A call is a decision only you should make. Before launch there are two: what you sell and for how much, and the sign-off to launch. Your company's name and look are made with it, so they're never a call unless you ask to change them. After that, your Manager can bring you others when a decision is yours, like a hire, a budget the work needs, or what matters most this month. You never get a blank question. The team makes the options, and picking one approves it.
Everything else, like how the outreach sounds, who to email or which tool to use, the team decides without you. A company you start from an idea runs its whole pre-launch checklist this way, in chapters. Other companies keep the plan they have, and their Manager can still bring you a call when a decision is yours. Pick what matters most this month, for example, and your Manager rebuilds the plan around it, keeping what's already done.
What a call looks like
Your Manager brings each call to your chat as one line: the call and how many options it has. Compare opens the card, where you pick: 2 to 4 options side by side, each with its reason and a Pick button, and one of them marked Recommended. Tap an option's preview to see them all side by side, larger.
A yes or no, like the sign-off to launch, is two buttons instead, with the recommendation above them.
Answering a call
- Pick the option you want. To add a thought, type it in Anything to change? first, like “the second, but warmer”, and it goes with your pick to whoever builds it.
- Tell your Manager in words, like “let's do the second one”. If it isn't clear which one you mean, your Manager asks.
- On Telegram or Slack, your Manager lists the options as numbered lines with a link to the card, and you reply with a number.
- Tell the teammate who made the options, in a conversation you started with them, and they record your pick.
Calls aren't decided on a voice call. Your Manager sends you to the card in your chat instead, so every decision has a record.
The first answer counts, and every copy of the card updates at once. In your chat, the call's line then says what you picked, and the work moves on.
None of these, or your own
None of these asks what's missing, then sends the team back for a fresh round with your note. A call gets three rounds. After the third, your Manager offers to refine the closest option, or asks you for something you like as a reference.
A sign-off has no None of these: pick Not yet and say what's missing in Anything to change?, and it comes back to you once the team has sorted it out.
On a call about the look, Use my own uploads your own image instead: a PNG, JPEG or WebP of up to 2 MB.
Where calls show up
- In your chat with your Manager, as their line (Compare opens the card), and above the message box until you answer (Compare options).
- On Waiting on you, at the top of the page, before anything else that's waiting on you.
- By email, with a Make the call button that opens the card, and in the desktop app as a notification. To stop the emails, switch off Company emails in Settings, then Notifications.
Only one call is open at a time, so “the second one” always means one thing. When the team has another ready, it waits its turn, and your Manager brings it as soon as you've decided. Work that doesn't need an open call keeps moving.
If you don't answer
A call never expires, and the team works ahead on everything that doesn't need it. What happens after 24 hours depends on how closely you follow along, which you can change by telling your Manager, or under Involvement in Settings, then Company.
| Involvement | After 24 hours |
|---|---|
| Hands-on | One reminder, by email. Then the call waits for you, and the daily recap lists it. |
| Check in weekly | One reminder, by email. Then the call waits for you, and the daily recap lists it. |
| Hands-off | Your Manager takes the recommended option and tells you, and you can change it any time. A budget is never picked for you: you get the reminder instead. |
The 24 hours start once you've pressed Start building, and nothing happens while the company is paused.
Changing your mind
Any call can be changed later. Tap a decided call's line in your chat and press Change on its card to start the request, or just tell your Manager, like “actually, let's change the offer”. Your Manager says in one line what the change touches, including anything that can't be undone, and the team brings you a fresh round of options. The change is a new call, and the old card says Changed since.
